SEWANEE, Tenn. (CentreColonels.com) - The Centre men's lacrosse team dropped a 13-5 decision to defending Southern Athletic Association (SAA) champion Sewanee on the road on Saturday in the Colonels' conference opener.

Centre moves to 4-2 overall and 0-1 in SAA play while the Tigers improve to 4-3 and 1-0, respectively.

Senior midfielder Austin Zehnder (Prospect, Ky.) got the Colonels on the board with a goal off the feed by sophomore attackman Leland Gray (Louisville, Ky.) in the first minute of the contest.

Unfortunately for Centre, Sewanee responded with six unanswered goals, including four man-up scores to gain a 7-1 advantage in the second quarter.

Senior midfielder Bryant Portwood (Charlotte, N.C.) would shrink the Tigers' edge to 7-2 with a goal for Centre to close the half.

Sewanee opened the second half with a pair of goals to extend its lead to 9-2, before freshman midfielder Dominic Nayan (Memphis, Tenn.) found senior midfielder Lorenzo Powell (Newcastle, Wash.) for a goal with just over four minutes to play in the fourth quarter.

Sewanee would outscore the Colonels 4-2 in the final period of action en route to the triumph.

Gray scored off the assist by sophomore forward Graeme Warner (Kent, Ohio) for Centre in the fourth quarter, followed by a goal by sophomore goalkeeper Sam Long (Cincinnati, Ohio), marking the first goal by a Colonel goalkeeper in program history.

Long handled the Centre clear himself, going coast-to-coast before slipping the goal past his counterpart from ten yards out.

Long also made 21 saves for the Colonels in the contest.

Sewanee outshot Centre 66-23 in the game to go with a 47-20 advantage in ground balls.

The Colonels return to action with a non-conference matchup at Randolph on Tuesday, March 21 at 6 p.m. ET.
