Face Offs Won
DANVILLE, Ky. (CentreColonels.com) – The Centre men's lacrosse team got back on the winning track as they welcomed the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels to Farris Stadium on Senior Day. The Colonels came away with a 23-3 win as 16 different players scored goals.
Senior Bryant Portwood (Charlotte, N.C.) kicked off his final home game in the gold and white with a bang, scoring a goal just 43 seconds into the contest. Senior Mason Paas (Louisville, Ky.) followed suit off the assist from sophomore Leland Gray, and then Gray scored a goal of his own to make it 3-0, and then junior Dominic Peluso (Redondo Beach, Calif.) found sophomore Graeme Warner (Kent, Ohio) for the Colonels' fourth consecutive goal. The Petrels snapped the scoring drought with a goal and the Centre went right back on the attack. Noah Hull (Decatur, Ga.) found Tommy Hood (Lafayette, Calif.) for a freshman-to-freshman connection on a scoring effort. Gray and Portwood each scored their second goal of the contest to close the quarter and the Colonels had a 7-1 lead.
In the second quarter, the Colonels picked up where they left off offensively. Senior Lorenzo Powell (Newcastle, Wash.) scored two minutes into the period and then Hull picked up his second assist of the game, finding freshman Vincent Pisacano (Lexington, Ky.) for a goal. Just 16 seconds after Pisacano's goal, Paas found Gray for the sophomore's third goal. Hood's second goal of the matchup came off of a nice assist by senior Austin Zehnder (Prospect, Ky.), and then at the 1:31 mark, freshman Dominic Nayan (Memphis, Tenn.) gave Centre a 12-1 lead. Centre looked to take the 12-1 lead into halftime, but then Hull scored off the feed from Gray with nine seconds remaining to give the Colonels a 13-1 lead going into intermission.
Oglethorpe opened the scoring to open the third period, but the Colonels would finish off the quarter with six straight goals. Zehnder, already with a pair of assists on the day, scored off the assist from sophomore Pierce Barber (Louisville, Ky.) to make it 14-2 Centre. Senior defensive stalwart Jake Marfise (Tampa, Fla.) picked up an assist on a goal from sophomore Emerson Prager (Colchester, Vt.). Junior John Moremen (Louisville, Ky.) scored the first of two goals in the game, as did freshman John Morrison (Franklin, Tenn.). Junior Ross McClellan (Louisville, Ky.) and freshman Will Anderson (Hixson, Tenn.) also entered the scoring column as the Colonels outscored Oglethorpe 10-2 in the second half.
The Colonels finished with 17 assists on their 23 goals, with six players recording two assists.
Senior Tom Whalen (Massapequa, N.Y.) earned the Senior Day start in goal and picked up the win and three saves.
Freshman Lucas Mozingo (Chattanooga, Tenn.) had his best faceoff day of the year, going 28-30 on faceoffs and pacing the Colonels with 11 ground balls.
The Colonels outshot the Petrels 62-10 and also had a 44-14 advantage in ground balls, led by Mozingo's 11.
The Centre men's lacrosse team will take to the road for their final regular season contests as they will face Hendrix and Rhodes next week.
