Colonels Edged by Hendrix 8-7 in SAA Matchup

CONWAY, Ark. (CentreColonels.com) – The Centre men's lacrosse team dropped an 8-7 decision at the hands of host Hendrix on Friday night in a Southern Athletic Association (SAA) contest at Young-Wise Memorial Stadium.
The Colonels fall to 5-7 on the season with a 2-2 ledger in SAA play while the Warriors improve to 8-6 with a 3-3 mark in the conference.
After Hendrix got on the board just over a minute into the game, senior midfielder Bryant Portwood (Charlotte, N.C.) found the back of the cage to knot the game at 1-1 late in the first quarter.
The two teams traded scores in the second quarter, with freshman midfielder Dominic Nayan (Memphis, Tenn.) dishing assists to junior attackman Dominic Peluso (Redondo Beach, Calif.) and senior midfielder Austin Zehnder (Prospect, Ky.) to tie the game at 3-3.
The Warriors would close the second period with a pair of goals to gain a 5-3 edge heading into the locker room.
In the third quarter, Centre cut the Hendrix advantage to 5-4 with another goal by Peluso off the feed by Nayan with 7:37 showing on the clock.
The Warriors built their lead back to two at 6-4 early in the fourth quarter, but sophomore attackman Leland Gray's (Louisville, Ky.) man-up score minimized the deficit back to one at 6-5.
Hendrix answered with a goal by Alex Ortenstone with just over four minutes to play, when Peluso netted his third goal of the night off the assist by Gray to shrink the Warriors' lead to 7-6.
However, Hendrix's Drew Scanlan pushed the Warriors' advantage back to two at 8-6 1:36 remaining.
Gray would score with five ticks to play, moving the final margin to 8-7.
Peluso paced the Colonels with three goals to go with four ground balls. Gray had two goals and an assist while Nayan recorded three assists for Centre.
Colonel goaltender Sam Long (Cincinnati, Ohio) made 21 saves between the pipes for Centre, his third 20-save game of the season.
Ortenstone led all players with four goals and three assists for Hendrix.
The Colonels cap the 2017 regular season on the road at Rhodes on Sunday at noon CT. The Lynx topped Sewanee 12-6 on Friday night to capture at least a share of the SAA regular season title.
