Hawks stump Colonels in midweek meeting, 8-3

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Centre men's lacrosse fell 8-3 Wednesday afternoon at Huntingdon, competing in Samford Stadium on the Hawks' campus.

The Colonels drop to 1-1 on the young season, while Huntingdon moves to 2-0.

The host Hawks dominated possession in the opening quarter, putting three scores on the board while limiting the Colonels' time in their attacking third.

Huntingdon tacked on another goal late in the second quarter as Kendrick Ballard found the back of the net with barely one minute remaining, making it 4-0 at the half.

A pair of Centre rookies finally broke the scoring drought with two goals in quick succession in the third quarter.

Freshman Anthony DiMichele (Cincinnati) put away a feed from senior Dominic Peluso (Redondo Beach, Calif.) near the 12-minute mark.

Freshman Padraic Dermody (Louisville, Ky.) then netted a goal just 73 seconds later with an assist from sophomore Dominic Nayan (Memphis, Tenn.), bringing Centre within 4-2.

Both scores were collegiate-firsts for DiMichele and Dermody.

The Hawks would add two more of their own, however, pushing their lead back to four goals at 6-2 heading to the fourth quarter.

Peluso scored his second goal of the season in the final period, but Huntingdon closed the door on any comeback with two tallies to finish the scoring.

Huntingdon finished with 23 ground balls to Centre's 18, and out-shot the Colonels 39 to 27 (16 to 14 on-goal).

Sophomore midfielder Noah Hull (Decatur, Ga.) paced Centre with four ground balls, and reigning SAA Defensive Player of the Week, Ross McClellan (Louisville, Ky.), led the team with three caused turnovers.

Centre is back in action Saturday, traveling to face Mt. St. Joseph at 1 p.m. ET.
