No. 17 Colonels Edged by No. 2 Kenyon 1-0
Shots (on goal)
GAMBIER, Ohio (CentreColonels.com) – The No. 17 Centre men's soccer team dropped a close 1-0 decision to second-ranked Kenyon in a battle of ranked squads on Wednesday afternoon at Mavec Field. The Lords improved to 7-0 with the victory, while the Colonels suffer their first defeat of the season, moving to 5-1.
Kenyon came out firing right out of the gate, as the Lords combined for eight shots in the first seven minutes of action. Two of those attempts were saved by Centre sophomore goalkeeper Bailey Spade (Frankfort, Ky.), with another nailing the crossbar.
Kenyon was finally able to get one to the back of the net when Brice Koval's header off the throw-in by teammate Woo Jeon in the 23rd minute of action slipped past Spade. This goal would prove to be the difference in the contest.
Despite being outshot at an 18-3 clip, the Colonels held the Lords to just one goal. Kenyon had come into the contest averaging over three scores per game.
Spade made a total of four saves between the pipes for Colonels against a high-powered Lords attack. The Centre defense held the Kenyon offense to just six shots in the second half.
The Colonels open Southern Athletic Association (SAA) play on Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. hosting defending regular season champion Oglethorpe at Hillside Field.
