DANVILLE, Ky. (CentreColonels.com) – Oglethorpe's Topher Marshall capitalized on a penalty kick opportunity early in the second overtime to lift the visiting Stormy Petrels to a 2-1 victory over the 17th-ranked Centre men's soccer team on Saturday afternoon in the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) opener at Hillside Field.
The Colonels dropped to 5-0-2 overall and 0-1-0 in SAA action, while Oglethorpe earned its first win of the year to move to 1-4-2 and 1-0-0, respectively.
After a scoreless first half, Rodrigo Meade's goal in the 76th minute of play put the Stormy Petrels on top 1-0, before junior forward Brad Nordin (Paintsville, Ky.) found junior defender Jesse DiLuzio (North Woodmere, N.Y.) for his second goal of the season and the equalizer in the 83rd minute.
Neither team was able to gain an edge in the final seven minutes, sending the SAA contest into overtime.
Oglethorpe outshot the Colonels 5-0 in the first overtime, but Centre sophomore goalkeeper Bailey Spade (Frankfort, Ky.) made a pair of saves to preserve the tie.
In the first minute of the second overtime, Marshall was taken down in the box before sealing the win with the penalty kick score.
Spade finished with nine saves in net for the Colonels.
The Stormy Petrels outshot Centre 22-10 in the win, but the Colonels held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Senior midfielder Phil Shehan (Orlando, Fla.) paced Centre with three shots on the day.
The Colonels return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 27 hosting local rival Transylvania at 7:30 p.m. at Hillside Field. This marks the first meeting between the schools since the 2001 campaign.
