@CentreSoccer Upends Local Rival Transylvania 2-1

DANVILLE, Ky. (CentreColonels.com) – Meeting for the first time since the 2001 season, the Centre men's soccer team got the best of local rival Transylvania by a score of 2-1 on Tuesday night under the lights at Hillside Field.

The Colonels, who now own an 8-2-4 advantage in the all-time series against the Pioneers, improve to 6-2-0 on the season. Centre handed Transylvania its first defeat of the season, as the Pioneers drop to 5-1-2 with the loss.

The Colonels also snapped a two-game skid with the triumph.

Centre got on the board first when junior defender Jesse DiLuzio (Danville, Ky.) found classmate Brad Nordin (Paintsville, Ky.) for his fourth goal of the season in just the seventh minute of action.

The Colonels would take that 1-0 lead into half time, owning a 10-5 advantage in shots as well.

In the 58th minute of play, Transylvania's Alex Shkraba netted the equalizer off the assist by Kent Maidens.

Just over three minutes later, senior forward Christian Gateskill (Danville, Ky.) responded with a goal of his own to put Centre back on top 2-1.

The Pioneers would have a great chance in the closing seconds of the contest when Josh Morgan got a header off, but Colonel sophomore goaltender Bailey Spade (Frankfort, Ky.) made the diving save to seal the win for Centre.

The Colonels edged Transylvania 17-16 in shots and 6-4 in corner kicks on the night.

Spade finished with seven saves in the victory, his fourth game this season with five-or-more stops.

Gateskill matched a game-high with three shots for Centre. He and Nordin are now tied for fifth in the SAA with eight points on the season.

The Colonels return to Southern Athletic Association (SAA) action on Friday night at Hillside Field at 5:30 p.m. Centre advanced past the Vikings last season in a penalty kick shootout in the first round of the SAA Tournament.
