Fifth-ranked Kenyon sinks Centre with late goals

DANVILLE, Ky. - The Centre men's soccer team played the preseason No. 5 Kenyon Lords to a scoreless tie for 66 minutes, but Kenyon came away with a pair of late goals to take a 2-0 victory over the Colonels in the finals of the 28th Annual Bob Allen Nissan Classic.

The first half was a defensive struggle, with neither team able to gain much momentum. Centre's best scoring chance came in the 28th minute when a blast from junior Alexander Garuba hit the crossbar. Good team defense and some clutch work in goal from junior Bailey Spade (Frankfort, Ky.) kept the game scoreless as the two teams went into the locker room for halftime.

As the Lords applied more pressure in the second half, the Centre defense refused to cave, thanks again to another key save by Spade. Kenyon finally broke through in the 67th minute as Collyn Carpenter found Henry Myers for the first goal of the contest. Eleven minutes later, Kenyon struck again as Woo Jeon put the Lords up 2-0 in the 78th minute.

Down by two goals late, the Colonels had a great chance at cutting the deficit in half on a header by senior Noah Wesley-Chevalier (Cincinnati), but the attempt was turned away by Kenyon keeper Ian McInturf to preserve the 2-0 win for the Lords.

Junior Jacob Haddad (Brentwood, Tenn.), sophomore Patrick Ferrell (Nashville, Tenn.) and freshman Michael Vogt (Wilder, Ky.) represented Centre on the Bob Allen Nissan Classic XI.

The Colonels will be back in action on Thursday, Sept. 14 as they travel to Transylvania to take on the Pioneers. Centre defeated Transylvania 2-1 in last season's matchup in Danville
