Men’s soccer shuts out Berry in road conference victory

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. – The Centre men's soccer squad picked up a well-earned Southern Athletic Association (SAA) victory at Berry Friday night, defeating the Vikings 3-0 at Pearson Field.
The Colonels (5-3-1, 1-0-1 SAA) had three separate goal scorers and a clean sheet from junior keeper Bailey Spade (Lexington, Ky.) en route to their first conference winning decision. Berry (3-4-0, 0-1-0) dropped its fourth in a row and first conference match.
About midway through the half, senior forward Noah Wesley-Chevalier tallied Centre's second goal and his second of the year, making it 2-0.
The host Vikings put just one shot on goal in the first half, but a diving save from Spade kept them off the board.
Up 2-0 at the break, the Colonels would add an insurance goal from freshman Royce Pope (Tampa, Fla.) in the in the 72nd minute. The rookie forward buried his team-leading fourth goal of the season off a rebound to increase the lead to 3-0.
Spade finished with his fourth clean sheet of the season, earning the feat with four total saves. He topped his diving save in the first half with an impressive stop on a Berry penalty kick in the 81st minute to preserve the shutout.
Centre out-shot Berry 17 to 11 (7 to 4 on goal), and was led by Garuba's three total attempts. He and Dunn co-led the Colonels with two shots on goal apiece.
Centre has a brief respite from SAA action, traveling to face Maryville (Tenn.) Sunday at 2 p.m. ET before resuming the conference slate next weekend.
