Shots (on goal)
DANVILLE Ky. - Centre men's soccer played a strong match on both sides of the ball on Friday evening, earning a 2-1 victory at home against Rhodes.
The Colonels improve to 6-4-2 overall and 2-0-2 in conference play with the win, while the Lynx fall to 6-4-2 and 2-3 in the Southern Athletic Association.
The Colonels flew out to a fast start, tallying 11 shots and three on goal in the first 45 minutes of play.
Centre got on the board early in the first half, when sophomore Richard Feil (Cincinnati, Ohio) found Senior Noah Wesley-Chevalier (Cincinnati, Ohio) in the 20th minute, giving the Colonels an early 1-0 advantage. The goal continued the hot streak for Wesley-Chevalier, who has now scored four times in the last three contests.
Neither team could muster anymore offense until the 55th minute when Feil launched a rocket of a shot from distance beating Rhodes's goalie topside, tallying his first goal of the season.
The Lynx's William Mitchell capitalized on a penalty kick in the 77th minute, cutting the Colonels' lead in half.
Rhodes had several opportunities to tie the game in the remaining minutes of play, but the Centre defense held strong.
Centre (15 shots, 5 on goal) and Rhodes (12 shots, 4 on goal) were nearly identical in the box score. Rhodes finished with three corners to the Colonels' two.
The Colonels continue conference play on Sunday, hosting the Hendrix Warriors at 2:30 p.m. ET.
