DANVILLE Ky. – Centre men's soccer thwarted Birmingham Southern, 2-0, in the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) quarterfinal on Saturday afternoon at Amend Field.
The Colonels improve to 12-4-2 overall and advance to the semifinal round next Friday at Oglethorpe.
Centre got out to a fast start Saturday, in what was a rematch of last season's SAA quarterfinal, pressuring Birmingham Southern early and often with a well-timed passing attack.
Two minutes into the first half, junior Alexander Garuba (Atlanta) tallied his seventh goal of the season off of a Noah Wesley-Chevalier (Cincinnati) assist, giving the Colonels an early 1-0 advantage.
Both teams remained deadlocked until the 65th minute when Jacob Haddad (Brentwood, Tenn.) found the back of the net off of a Wesley-Chevalier assist, his second of the afternoon.
The Colonels finished with 22 shots to the visitors' 13, and had six corners while the Panthers registered none.
Junior Bailey Spade (Frankfort, Ky.) had a solid afternoon, registering five saves, and holding the Panthers scoreless. Spade and the entire Colonel defensive unit has been on a roll as of late, recording four shutouts in the last four contests.
With the win, Centre advances to the semifinal round of the SAA Tournament and will face off against six-seed Millsaps next week at Oglethorpe. The Colonels and Majors drew their regular season meeting, 2-2, back on Oct. 6.
