Centre men's tennis competes in ITA Regional Championships
MOUNT BERRY, Ga. – Centre men's tennis competed at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Championships this weekend at Berry College.
A handful of Colonels picked up wins across the various singles and doubles flights.
In singles, freshman Arpit Maini (Spartanburg, S.C.) found some success in the main consolation draw, defeating Guilford's Mason Robb, 6-3, 7-6(2), and Rhodes' Sairam Gudiseva, 6-1, 6-4, before falling in the quarterfinals.
Fellow rookie Casey Diamond (Louisville, Ky.) also had a solid run in the "Silver" singles consolation, reaching the finals. He defeated Tristian Smallwood of Covenant by a lopsided 6-0, 6-0 score before battling Berry's Avery Cornett in a three-set match, which he won, 6-2, 4-6, 1-0(7). Diamond then handed Huntington's Kevaughnte Merrion a 6-0, 6-0 defeat to earn a spot in the bracket finals, which went unplayed.
Sophomore Joshua Joiner (Danville, Ky.) won one consolation match in the same flight, defeating Ben Toukel of Covenant, 6-1, 6-4.
In the "Gold" singles consolation, Matthew Ko (Nicholasville, Ky.) won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, against Belhaven's Tracy Hilaire.
Junior Benjamin Hadlock (Okemos, Mich.) won his first round match in the "Silver" singles draw, defeating Piedmont's Alex Tomlin, 6-4, 6-2.
In doubles, Ko and Joiner paired up to defeat NCW's Martherus and Schachmann, 8-2, in the "Gold" bracket before falling in the second round.
In the "Silver" doubles bracket, Hadlock and Adam Slone (Lexington, Ky.) cruised past Huntington's Merrion/Berry, 8-0. The two reached the semifinals after an 8-1 victory against Piedmont's Patterson/Wright.
