Men’s tennis drops heartbreaking 5-4 decision against Earlham
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Centre men's tennis team lost five of six singles bouts Sunday, falling 5-4 against Earlham at the Lexington Tennis Club.
Centre (0-3) swept all three doubles matches against the Quakers (4-2), but was edged in a hard-fought singles slate.
The Colonels turned in a strong three-match effort in doubles action, beginning at No. 1 where Arpit Maini (Spartanburg, S.C.) and Trey Akmon (Louisville, Ky.) defeated Earlham's Stadnyk-Tatarevic tandem, 8-2.
Matthew Ko (Nicholasville, Ky.) and Josh Joiner (Danville, Ky.) paired up at No. 2 doubles to defeat Jason Lawson and Aleks Sergeev, 8-6, and Max Middleton (Atlanta) and Ben Hadlock (Okemos, Mich.) won a close 9-7 match over Nicola Manni and Brandon Giordanelli at No. 3.
The Quakers won the first three singles matches completed, drawing the overall score level at 3-3.
Akmon continued his strong start to the spring with a come-from-behind 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 victory over Manni in No. 4 singles, putting the Colonels one point from an overall win.
But Earlham took singles Nos. 5 and 6 in incredibly close fashion to secure the win. Giordanelli defeated Ko, 7-5, 7-6(8), before Joaquin bested Hadlock in three sets.
