NAIA-ranked Eagles topple Colonels, 9-0
DANVILLE, Ky. – The Colonels men's tennis squad took on visiting Asbury late Wednesday afternoon, falling 9-0 on the Centre Tennis Courts.
Centre slides to 5-11 overall with the loss, while the Eagles – ranked in the top 20 nationally among NAIA programs – improve to 8-1.
Asbury won each doubles bout by identical 8-2 scores, including at No. 1 where the Eagles' top duo of Joshua Turnquest and Julian Tellez defeated Arpit Maini (Spartanburg, S.C.) and Adam Slone (Lexington, Ky.), 8-2. The Asbury pair entered the match as one of the best duos in the NAIA East Region.
Despite dropping all six singles matches, the Colonels battled and forced three sets on half the courts.
At No. 2 singles, Max Middleton (Atlanta) went toe-to-toe with Choopat Suvimolstean before falling 6-7, 7-6, 1-0 (4).
Slone rallied to win set two at No. 3 singles against Tellez, but also dropped in three sets, 7-6, 2-6, 1-0 (5).
At No. 4 singles, Matthew Ko (Nicholasville, Ky.) was defeated 7-6, 1-6, 1-0 (8) by Shane Mustor.
Centre wraps up its regular season this weekend, traveling to face Oglethorpe (April 14) and Berry (April 15).
