Centre Men Finish 7th at Home Invite, Toney Breaks Pole Vault Record
DANVILLE, Ky. (CentreColonels.com) – Centre track and field celebrated a milestone this weekend as the Colonels hosted the 50th annual Centre Invitational. The men's team scored 43.5 points to finish seventh in the 18-team field, with the highlight of the meet happening in the pole vault as a new school record was set.
Senior Isaac Toney (Watkinsville, Ga.) cleared 14-05.50 to set a new Centre men's pole vault record by over two inches, breaking the previous record that had been set by Michael Orr in 2014. In total, the Colonels accumulated 20 points in the pole vault as senior Ivy Duggan (Rome, Ga.) finished second in the event behind Toney and junior Seth Yocum (Danville, Ky.) finished seventh.
In other jumping events, freshman Caleb Vanorio (Falmouth, Ky.) took fifth place in the long jump for four points. Junior Elijah Scott (Cambridge, Mass.) finished fifth in the high jump, while sophomore Brendan Holly (Sidney, Neb.) posted two scoring jumps, finishing seventh in the high jump and eighth in the triple jump.
In the throwing events, Ivy Duggan finished fourth in the javelin with a throw of 145-01, good for five points. Sophomore J.D. Dotson (White House, Tenn.) had a throw of 138-09 to finish eighth in the men's hammer.
The Colonels had a pair of scorers in the 1500m, as sophomore Nathan Riggs (Campbellsville, Ky.) finished sixth with a time of 4:10.17, while junior Alex Stickney (Springboro, Ohio) finished a little over second behind Riggs in eighth at 4:11.46. The final points of the day for the Centre men came courtesy of the 4x400m relay squad, who finished sixth and scored three points.
The next meet for the Centre men's track and field team will be on Apr. 9 as they head to Williamsburg, Ky. to compete in the Cumberlands Invitational.
