Men’s Track Opens Outdoor Season with Eighth Place Finish at BSC

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (CentreColonels.com) – This weekend marked the beginning of the outdoor season for the Centre men's track and field team and the Colonels headed to Birmingham Southern for the 2017 Southern Invitational. In a field spanning all divisions, the Colonels scored 54 points and finished in eighth place for their outdoor debut.

The first points of the day for the Colonels came in the 200m, where sophomore Rhoman James (Lexington, Ky.) posted a time of 22.65 to finish in sixth overall.

In hurdling events, the Colonels scored twice in both races. In the 110m hurdles, freshman Henry Gunner (Elma, N.Y.) finished second with a time of 16.42 and was joined in the scoring column by fellow freshman Thomas Burkey (Greenville, Tenn.), whose time of 17.09 was good enough for fifth overall. Burkey placed better in the 400m hurdles, finishing third in just over a minute flat. Junior Daniel Crall (Danville, Ky.) finished right behind Burkey in fourth place with a time of 1:01.51.

Sophomore Keenan Jones raced in the 3000m steeplechase on Friday and had a good showing, finishing in 10:44.80 to take third place overall.

In relay competition, the Colonels scored in a pair of events. Centre's 4x100m relay squad finished in sixth place with a time of 44.70, while the 4x400 team placed the highest of any Division III team in the field, taking third place in 3:36.12.

Thomas Burkey scored in his third event of the meet for the Colonels in the high jump, clearing 5-08.75 to finish in seventh. Henry Gunner finished seventh in the long jump after clearing 20-08.50.

Finally, in throws, the best events of the day belonged to junior J.D. Dotson (White House, Tenn.), who took fifth place in the hammer with a throw of 139-06 as well as sixth place in the javelin with a throw of 129-05. Sophomore Bryce Whitman (Franklin, Tenn.) placed eighth in a pair of events, throwing 126-82 in the discus and 128-02 in the hammer.

The next meet for the Centre men's track and field team will be the Rhodes Invite on Mar. 17-18.
