Centre Men’s Track in Sixth after Opening Day at SAA Championships
MOUNT BERRY, Ga. (CentreColonels.com) – The first day of the Southern Athletic Association Track and Field Championship meet wrapped up earlier this afternoon at Berry College. Although Friday's action primarily featured preliminary heats, some of the events were finalized and Centre ended up with 23 points to sit in sixth place with Saturday's events still to come.
The Colonels currently sit three points back of Sewanee. Birmingham Southern leads the men's standings with 72 points, followed by Rhodes with 54 and Hendrix with 41.
Sophomore Keenan Jones (Frankfort, Ky.) scored four points for the Colonels in the men's 3000m steeplechase, finishing in 10:19.37, good for fifth place overall.
The rest of the finalized events from Friday came in the field. In the pole vault, senior Stephen Orr (Murray, Ky.) and junior Bryce Marshall (Danville, Ky.) each cleared 3.79 meters to finish in a respective sixth and seventh place. Sophomore William Blackford (Louisville, Ky.), competing in his first collegiate track and field season, placed third in the long jump after covering 6.44 meters.
Three throwing events also wrapped up on Friday. The best finish for Centre came in the shot put, where sophomore Bryce Whitman (Franklin, Tenn.) took fifth place with a throw of 13.70 meters. In the hammer throw, junior Hunter Gann (Bowling Green, Ky.) finished in seventh place with a mark of 42.63 meters. William Blackford was the only Centre athlete to score in multiple events on Friday, placing seventh in the javelin with a mark of 47.34 meters.
The SAA Track and Field Championships will conclude on Saturday, featuring events where Centre athletes are ranked high on the SAA performance list, including the 100m, 200m, 800m, hurdles and discus.
