Colonels Post Fifth-Place Finish at SAA Championships
MT. BERRY, Ga. (CentreColonels.com) – The Centre men's track and field team capped the 2017 Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Championships with a fifth-place finish at the event on Saturday at Valhalla Stadium on the campus of Berry College.
Birmingham-Southern won the meet with 227.50 points, followed by Rhodes second with 146.50, Hendrix third with 130.50, Berry fourth with 94.50 and the Colonels fifth with 69 points.
Freshman Henry Gunner (Elma, N.Y.) captured the title in the 110-meter hurdles, crossing the finish line in 15.66 seconds for Centre. Classmate Thomas Burkey (Greenville, Tenn.) placed sixth in the event with a time of 16.74.
Sophomore Rhoman James (Lexington, Ky.) placed second in both the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes, finishing the races in 10.77 seconds and 21.98 seconds, respectively. Birmingham-Southern's Jamal Watkins won both events and ranks in the top three in both races in Division III. Watkins edged James by .3 seconds in the 100-meter dash.
Burkey added a fifth-place mark of 57.80 in the 400-meter hurdles followed by Gunner in sixth with a time of 58.12.
Centre's 4x100-meter relay team consisting of James, Gunner, sophomore Stone Fentzlaff (Fairview, N.C.) and junior Tristen Morrow (Danville, Ky.) posted a second-place finish in the event with a time of 42.49.
