No. 5 Berry Holds Off @CentreCSoftball Upset Bid

MT. BERRY, Ga. ( - The Centre softball team jumped out to an early 1-0 lead over #5 Berry, but the unbeaten Vikings held off the upset bid, rallying back to earn the weekend sweep with a 2-1 victory Sunday afternoon at Kay Williams Field.

The Colonels forced Berry starter Kassie Howard into a bases loaded jam in the top of the first inning after freshman outfielder RileyAnne Sharpe (Huntsville, Ala.) led the game off with a single and later would score after junior Madison DeBord (Danville, Ky.) was hit by a pitch.

A pitcher's duel for the better part of the afternoon, Howard held Centre without a base hit until sophomore Cassidy Cook (Louisville, Ky.) singled to left center to open the top of the fifth, while senior starter Elysse Petrie (Danville, Ky.) tossed four scoreless innings for the Colonels, limiting the high-powered Viking offense to just three hits while fanning a batter and not surrendering any walks.

Berry's Kylie Aiken led off the fifth inning with a walk before Marie Collop doubled down the right field line to tie the game up at one.

The Colonels could not respond to in the top of sixth, before an error in the bottom half of the frame led to the Vikings taking a 2-1 lead. Freshman Abigail Harper (Louisville, Ky.) started the top of the seventh off with a walk, but would be left stranded on base as Berry held on for the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) win.
Centre limited Berry to its lowest run total of the season in the contest.
The Colonels fall to 2-5 overall and 0-3 in the SAA on the season while the Vikings stay perfect on the season at 13-0 overall, 3-0 in conference.
