Colonels Split Saturday SAA Doubleheader at Hendrix

CONWAY, Ark. ( - The Centre softball team (3-6,1-4) picked up its first Southern Athletic Association (SAA) win of the season by a score of 7-6 over Hendrix (6-5,1-4) on Saturday in game one of a conference doubleheader before dropping game two 1-0 to the host Warriors.

Game One: Centre 7, Hendrix 6

The Warriors jumped out to an early 2-0 lead over the Colonels in the first game of the twinbill, plating both runs in the first off of pair of run-scoring extra base hits.

The Colonels responded in the top half of the second when sophomore catcher Cassidy Cook (Louisville, Ky.) doubled to left center scoring junior center fielder Madison DeBord (Danville, Ky.).

The Warriors extended the lead back to two runs in the bottom half of the frame when Victoria Hughes doubled scoring Dasha Donahoe.

Centre knotted things up in the top half of the fifth when junior second baseman Ellen Stephens (Louisville, Ky.) hit a leadoff double before scoring on a Jessika Young (Leitchfield, Ky.) triple.

Lauren Richards (Danville, Ky.) would come in to pinch run for Young and then scored on a sacrifice fly by senior right fielder Brittany Sears (Lexington, Ky.).

The game would not stay tied for long, however, as the Warriors responded with a three-run fifthinning to gain a 6-3 advantage.

Freshman shortstop Mary-Carter Downing (Lexington, Ky.) singled to start the top of the sixth followed by back-to-back singles by freshman left fielder Abigail Harper (Louisville, Ky) and Stephens.

Young then gave the Colonels the lead for good with a grand slam over the center field fence to grab a 7-6 lead.

Senior pitcher Elysse Petrie (Danville, Ky.) tossed five innings for the Colonels and picked up her first win of the season while Erika Brewer (Frenchburg, Ky.) gave up one hit over two innings to pick up the save for Centre.

Young paced the Colonels at the plate going 2-for-3 with the grand slam, a triple, five RBI, a run scored and a walk.

Stephens went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored while Downing was 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Game two: Hendrix 1, Centre 0

The Warriors scored in the bottom of the second off a RBI double by Nikki Sanders and that would be all they needed in game two of the double header.

The Colonels were held without a hit until the third stanza when Cook singled down the right field line. Centre tallied four hits in game two and left two runners on base.

Brewer went all six innings for the Colonels, allowing the one run on six hits while fanning four batters.

The Colonels will look to win the rubber match of the three-game league series on Sunday afternoon with first pitch scheduled for noon CT in Conway, Ark.
