Colonels Sweep Home Opener Versus Wilmington

DANVILLE, Ky. (CentreColonels.com) - The Centre softball team earned its first doubleheader sweep of the season on Wednesday, topping Wilmington twice in the 2017 home opener. The Colonels battled in game one that went eight innings, winning 2-1 before Centre's bats came alive in game two, as the Colonels won by a score of 11-3.

Game One: Centre 2, Wilmington 1

A pitcher's duel ruled the majority of the game as senior Jessika Young (Leitchfield, Ky.) went eight innings giving up one run on six hits, fanning six batters while walking just two.

The game was scoreless until the top of the second when Wilmington took advantage of a Centre error to score the first run of the game.

The Colonels were held in check until the bottom of the fifth when freshman Abigail Harper (Louisville, Ky.) drew a one out walk before scoring when Ellen Stephens (Louisville, Ky.) smashed a double to right center to knot things up at one.

Neither team could score through seven frames and Young worked out of a jam to start the eighth inning.

Sophomore Cassidy Cook (Louisville, Ky.) was placed on second to begin the bottom of the eighth before Stephens singled to move her over to third and Young drew a walk to load the bases. In the next at bat, Cook would cross the plate on a wild pitch to seal the 2-1 walk off win for the Colonels.

Stephens went 2-for-4 with a RBI in the victory while Young went 1-for-2 with a double and a pair of walks. Young also evened her record in the circle to 1-1 on the year with the triumph.

Game Two: Centre 11, Wilmington 3

The Colonels bats came alive in game two with 16 hits, including seven doubles and a monster home run from Young.

Wilmington struck first to begin the game when Mariyah Burkhardt hit a two-out RBI double.

The Colonels responded in the bottom half of the first when Young hit her team-leading second home run of the season over the scoreboard in left center field to put Centre ahead 2-1.

The Colonels put up two more scores in the bottom of the second when junior Madison Debord (Danville, Ky.) cracked an RBI double down the left field line, before scoring two batters later when Harper singled to center.

Wilmington would get one back in the top of the third when Savannah Hooper scored on an error.

The Colonels again would respond when freshman Mary-Carter Downing (Lexington, Ky.) scored on a double by classmate Sarah Aubuchon (Lebanon, Tenn.).

The Colonels exploded for four more runs in the bottom of the fifth when Torey Hawkins (Frankfort, Ky.) plated two with a double. Stephens scored two more later in the inning with a single back up the middle.

Senior Brittany Sears (Lexington, Ky.) smashed a two-out double in the bottom of the sixth and would score when freshman RileyAnne Sharpe (Huntsville, Ala.) singled to right center and would advance to third on an error. Sharpe would score on a wild pitch to end the game during the very next at-bat.

Hawkins went four innings in the circle for the Colonels, giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits picking up her second win of the season.

Stephens picked up where she left off in game one going 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Aubuchon went 3-for-4 with a double, RBI and two runs, while Sharpe was 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs. Young finished 2-for-4 with a home run, double, two RBI and a run scored.
