Colonels Extend Winning Streak to Six with Sweep of Manchester
DANVILLE, Ky. (CentreColonels.com) – The Centre softball team pushed its winning streak to six games on Sunday with convincing 12-2 and 7-1 victories over Manchester (0-7-1) in a pair of non-conference matchups at the South Campus Field. The Colonels' (9-7) six-game winning streak marks the team's longest since the 2013 season.
Centre has five days off before returning to the diamond, heading to Georgia for an eight-game road trip beginning next Saturday, March 18 against Lynchburg in non-conference doubleheader in Atlanta starting at noon ET.
Game One: Centre 12, Manchester 2
The Colonels jumped out to an early 4-0 lead and scored at least one run in every inning on their way to a 12-2 victory in five frames.
Freshman right fielder RileyAnne Sharpe (Huntsville, Ala.) started things off with a leadoff single in the bottom of the first before scoring when freshman third baseman Sarah Aubuchon (Lebanon, Tenn.) reached first on a Spartan error.
After leading off the second inning with a bunt single, Sharpe would eventually score on a throwing error by Manchester to extend the Centre lead to 5-0.
The Spartans got on the board in the top of the third, but the Colonels responded in the bottom half of the frame when freshman shortstop Mary-Carter Downing (Lexington, Ky.) hit a leadoff single and later scored on a run-scoring single from Sears two batters later. Hawkins would reach on a fielder's choice plating another run for the Colonels.
The Colonels rolled in the fourth inning, scoring five runs on four hits.
Freshman left fielder Abigail Harper (Louisville, Ky.) led things off with a single and Stephens followed her with a double to center field to put runners on second and third. Aubuchon would smash a double down the left field line to score two.
After two straight walks to Downing and Cook to load the bases, a Sam Thompson (Louisville, Ky.) double would score two runners and seal the win for Centre.
Senior pitcher Elysse Petrie (Danville, Ky.) went the distance for the Colonels, giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits to improve to 3-1 on the season.
Sharpe finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored for Centre, while Hawkins went 1-for-3 with a team-high three RBI.
Game Two: Centre 7, Manchester 1
After three and a half scoreless frames, the Colonels plated all seven of their runs in the bottom half of the fourth stanza en route to the triumph.
Junior center fielder Madison DeBord (Danville, Ky.) brought home two runs with a single to get Centre on the board followed by an RBI single by Harper. Stephens battled her way to a walk to load the bases for Aubuchon, who smashed a grand slam home run over the left field fence to cap off a seven run inning by the Colonels.
Manchester would get one back in the top half of the sixth when Laurren Ladwig belted a solo shot to left, but that would prove to be the Spartans' lone run in game two.
Starting pitcher Erika Brewer (Frenchburg, Ky.) went all seven innings, scattering eight hits and giving up just one run while fanning two hitters. Brewer picked up her second win in the circle on the week.
Mabbs would finish the day 2-for-3 at the plate with a double and a run scored, while Aubuchon went 1-for-3 with the grand slam.
