Colonels Split Non-Conference Twinbill at Mt. St. Joseph
CINCINNATI (CentreColonels.com) – The Centre softball team split a non-conference twinbill on the road at Mt. St. Joseph on Wednesday night, as the Colonels (16-13) picked up a 6-2 triumph in game one before the Lions (9-7) earned a 9-7 win in the nightcap.
Colonels wasted little time putting a crooked number on the scoreboard, as freshman left fielder Abigail Harper's (Louisville, Ky.) two-run single to left field in the first inning plated freshman right fielder RileyAnne Sharpe (Huntsville, Ala.) and junior second baseman Ellen Stephens (Louisville, Ky.).
The Lions would answer right back in the home half of the first when Paige Kiesewetter belted a two-run home run.
In the fifth frame, freshman catcher Charlotte Mabbs (Olivette, Mo.) connected on a two-run single to right field, scoring junior Erica Arbuckle (Carmel, Ind.) and Harper to put the Colonels on top 4-2.
Centre would gain a 5-2 advantage when freshman third baseman Sarah Aubuchon (Lebanon, Tenn.) scored on a Mt. St. Joseph error during the next at-bat.
The Colonels tacked on another run in the seventh stanza when Aubuchon hit an RBI single to left field, scoring senior first baseman Jessika Young (Leitchfield, Ky.) on the play.
Junior pitcher Erika Brewer (Frenchburg, Ky.) earned the complete-game victory in the circle for Centre, improving to 5-7 on the year. Brewer allowed two runs on seven hits with a pair of strikeouts and two walks for the Colonels.
Harper was a perfect 3-for-3 in the game with a pair of runs driven in, a run scored and a walk.
Mabbs went 1-for-3 with two RBI and a walk, while Aubuchon finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored.
Kiesewetter suffered the loss for the Lions, allowing six runs (one earned) on eight hits with two strikeouts and six walks. She also went 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.

The Lions used a seven-run first inning en route to a 9-7 win in the nightcap.
Lauren Richards (Danville, Ky.) hit a lead-off single to begin the game and later came around to score on a RBI groundout by Young to put the Colonels on top. However, Mt. St. Joseph would answer with seven first inning runs.
The Colonels responded a few innings later, loading the bases in the top of the fifth frame. Stephens would reach on a fielder's choice to score senior right fielder Brittany Sears (Lexington, Ky.), who singled earlier in the inning. Richards reached on a fielder's choice before Stephens, later scored from third when Stephens stole second and forced the Lions catcher into committing an error.
The Lions would pick up one more in the bottom of the on a RBI double from Morgan Kain to extend the lead to 8-3.
Harper crossed the plate after singling to start the top of the sixth inning for the Colonels to cut the lead to four. The Lions then pushed the lead back to five on an RBI double by Danielle Nichelson in the bottom of the sixth.
The Colonels would look to rally in the top of the seventh inning when Richards singled to lead off the inning, before later scoring on a run-scoring double by Stephens. Centre loaded the bases with two outs after a Harper single and Sarah Aubuchon (Lebanon, Tenn.) drew a walk.
With two down and the bases loaded with the Colonels trailing by two runs, Mt. St. Joseph forced a Sears line out to the short stop to end the game.
Young pitched 5 1/3 innings for the Colonels in relief, giving up two runs on seven hits and added two strikeouts. Harper went 3-for-4 with two runs scored while Richards went 2-for-4 with three runs scored in the contest for the Colonels.
