Colonels Earn SAA Doubleheader Sweep of Sewanee
DANVILLE, Ky. (CentreColonels.com) - The Centre softball team scored a combined 27 runs en route to a doubleheader sweep of Southern Athletic Association (SAA) foe Sewanee on Saturday afternoon at the South Campus Field, winning game one 11-2 before shutting out the Tigers in game two by a score of 16-0.
The Colonels, who surpassed their win total from last season to improve to 18-14 on the season, return to action tomorrow at noon ET in the series finale against the Tigers.
Game One: Centre 11, Sewanee 2 (Five Innings)
The Colonels used a four-run first inning to lift themselves to an 11-2 win. Centre loaded the bases in the opening frame after three straight singles from freshman right fielder RileyAnne Sharpe (Hunstville, Ala.), junior second baseman Ellen Stephens (Louisville, Ky.) and senior pitcher Jessika Young (Leitchfield, Ky.). Freshman catcher Charlotte Mabbs (Olivette, Mo.) capped the inning with a two-run single up the middle.

Centre would respond in the bottom half of the frame, plating five runs to push the lead to 9-2. Freshman third baseman Sarah Aubuchon (Lebanon, Tenn.) led the inning off notching her team-leading 10th double of the season. After a Mabbs single, freshman first baseman Sam Thompson (Louisville, Ky.) singled up the middle to plate Aubuchon. Mabbs later scored after Thompson stole second and the Tigers committed a throwing error. The Colonels would load the bases again before plating two runs on a sacrifice fly by Young and a pinch-hit RBI single by senior Brittany Sears (Lexington, Ky.).
The Colonels added two more in the bottom of the fourth after Mabbs hit a lead-off triple and later scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Lauren Richards (Danville, Ky.). A RBI single from junior Erica Arbuckle (Carmel, Ind.) extended the lead to 11-2.
Young went four strong innings in the circle for the Colonels, giving up two runs on two hits and fanning four.
Mabbs went 3-for-3 at the plate with a triple, two runs scored and two RBI. Both Stephens and Aubuchon went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored for Centre.
Game Two: Centre 16, Sewanee 0 (Five Innings)
The Colonel offense came alive in game two, plating 16 runs on 19 hits, including an eight-run third that sealed the deal for the Centre win and the doubleheader sweep. The Colonels' 19 hits are the most for the Colonels since 2012, when Centre tallied 19 base hits against Sewanee.
Starting pitcher Erika Brewer (Frenchburg, Ky.) hurled her ninth complete game of the season, giving up three hits and striking out six to improve to 6-7 on the year in the circle.
The Colonels jumped on the board in the bottom of the first after a double by Mabbs which scored Richards and Stephens. Centre tacked on two more in the bottom of the second when Richards hit an RBI single scoring sophomore Cassidy Cook (Louisville, Ky.). Richards would score in the next at-bat when Sears doubled to center.
The Colonels collected eight more runs in the bottom of the fourth on nine hits, including five RBI doubles to extend the lead to 12-0. Richards belted a two-run home run to left field in the bottom of the fourth, before Thompson added two more on another RBI double to finish the game and seal another Colonel victory.
Mabbs finished the game 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI, while Richards was a triple away from hitting for the cycle for the Colonels, going 3-for-3 with three RBI and four runs scored.
