DANVILLE, Ky. (CentreColonels.com) - The Centre softball team completed the weekend sweep over Sewanee, winning game three 12-3 on Sunday afternoon at the South Campus Field. The Colonels boosted their records to 19-14 overall and 5-7 in Southern Athletic Association (SAA) play with the triumph.
Centre has now tallied its most wins since the 2013 season with 19 victories on the year.
On Sunday, senior pitcher Jessika Young (Leitchfield, Ky.) went the distance for the Colonels to pick up her fifth win on the season, allowing three runs on six hits with six strikeouts.
The Tigers got on the board first in the first inning when Caroline Sweetin hit a two-run single to left field.
The Colonels would respond an inning later with a five-run outburst that saw freshman catcher Charlotte Mabbs (Olivette, Mo.) and freshman outfielder Abigail Harper (Louisville, Ky.) each connect on RBI doubles for the Colonels.
Mabbs would continue her recent hot streak in the bottom of the third when she hit an RBI triple scoring freshman third baseman Sarah Aubuchon (Lebanon, Tenn.), who led the inning off with her team-leading 11th double of the season. The Colonels plated six more runs in the third to grab a commanding 12-2 lead after RBI singles from four different Colonels, including two from freshman infielder Mary-Carter Downing (Lexington, Ky.).
The Tigers would score one more in the fifth on a RBI double from Sweetin, but Young would hold on and get the last Tiger batter to pop up for the final out.
Mabbs finished the day 3-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored and was a home run short of the cycle. Downing also went 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBI and a two runs scored.
The Colonels return to action next Saturday, April 8 at 12:00 with a double header against conference foe Birmingham Southern.
