Colonels Split SAA Doubleheader at Rhodes

MEMPHIS ( – The Centre Softball team split Friday's Southern Athletic Association (SAA) doubleheader at conference foe Rhodes, dropping game one in heartbreaking fashion on a walk-off home run by a score of 6-5 before rebounding in game two earning the victory 6-2.

The rubber match of the three-game league set is scheduled for Saturday at 12:00pm CT at the Rhodes Softball Complex.  

Game One: Rhodes 6, Centre 5

The Lynx jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning thanks to a Rhodes two-run triple and an RBI double. However, the Colonels would respond in the top of the second, putting up three runs on the board. Freshman center fielder Abigail Harper (Louisville, Ky.) got things started with a RBI double and would later score on a fielder's choice by sophomore catcher Cassidy Cook (Louisville, Ky.).

Junior designated player Lauren Richards (Danville, Ky.) hit an RBI single later in the inning to tie the game at 3-3.

 The Lynx would respond in the bottom half of the inning plating a run-scoring single to take a 4-3 lead.

Rhodes held that one-run advantage until the top of the seventh inning when the Colonels connected on back-to-back RBI singles from senior Jessika Young (Leitchfield, Ky.) and freshman third baseman Sarah Aubuchon (Lebanon, Tenn.) to take a 5-4 lead heading into the home half of the seventh.  

The Lynx, down to their final two outs, pressured Colonel reliever Erika Brewer into a one-out double before Kendall Henry drove a two-run home run over the fence to give Rhodes the 6-5 victory.

Young went 2-for-4 in the game with a double, RBI and run scored while senior right fielder Brittany Sears (Lexington, Ky.) was 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored.

Junior pitcher Erika Brewer (Frenchburg, Ky.) takes the loss to fall to 6-9 on the season, going 3.1 innings and allowing two runs on four hits with a strikeout.  

Game Two: Centre 6, Rhodes 2

The Colonels would rebound from the game walk off, compiling nine base hits in the 6-2 victory.

Richards and freshman left fielder RileyAnne Sharpe (Huntsville, Ala.) hit back-to-back singles up the middle to lead off the game before junior second baseman Ellen Stephens (Louisville, Ky.) drew a walk to load the bases. Young followed with a two-run single to give Centre the early lead.

Centre held onto the 2-0 lead heading into the fifth, until Aubuchon launched her second home run of the year over the center field fence to extend the lead to 5-0.

Rhodes would get one back in the bottom half of the frame on RBI fielder's choice with the bases loaded, but Young would plate one more for the Colonels in the sixth with a RBI double, scoring Richards on the play.

The Lynx plated a run in the bottom of the seventh, but Brewer would seal the win for the Colonels starting hurler Elysse Petrie (Danville, Ky.)

Petrie moves to 7-3 on the season, going five strong innings and limiting Rhodes to one run on six hits with four strikeouts.

Young stayed at the plate going 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI for the Colonels, while Aubuchon finished 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored. In addition, Richards was 2-for-4 with two runs scored in the nightcap.
