DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre softball dropped a pair of games Tuesday evening to NAIA-No. 12 Campbellsville, falling 8-7 in a narrow opener before being handed a 17-0 loss in the second contest.
The Colonels fall to 2-4 overall while Campbellsville improves to 4-0.
GAME ONE: Campbellsville 8, Centre 7
Centre nearly overcame a seven-run hole in an exciting first game.
The Colonels got into trouble early in the opener, as Campbellsville took advantage of a fielding error and plated a pair runs in the top of the first.
Campbellsville added to its lead in the second, powered by Riley Oldham's two-run homer.
Trailing by six, Centre got on the board in the bottom of the fourth when Charlotte Mabbs (Olivette, Mo.) scored on a passed ball.
The Colonels continued to chip away at the Lady Tigers' lead, scoring in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to set up just a two-run deficit heading to the seventh.
Cassidy Cook (Louisville, Ky.) scored following a miscue by Campbellsville in the final inning, making it just an 8-7 lead.
Despite getting the game-tying runner to third, the Colonels couldn't do any more damage as the Lady Tigers survived an eight-error performance.
Melissa Collins (Louisville, Ky.) went 3-for-3 to lead Centre at the plate, but as a team the Colonels left 13 runners on base.
GAME TWO: Campbellsville 17, Centre 0 (5 innings)
Early trouble haunted the Colonels in the nightcap, as well, as Campbellsville had 10 runners cross the plate in the second inning.
The Lady Tigers scored in each of the following three innings – capped by Oldham's second homerun of the night – to officially end the game in five.
Centre managed just four hits off of Campbellsville's pitchers, with Collins recording her team-leading fourth of the night.
The Colonels begin Southern Athletic Association (SAA) action this weekend, beginning with a doubleheader at Birmingham Southern Feb. 24 at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. ET.
