Colonels walk-off game one, split Saturday DH against Hendrix
DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre softball split a Southern Athletic Association doubleheader Saturday against Hendrix, winning game one in walk-off fashion before falling in game two.
The Colonels move to 4-7 overall and 2-3 in the SAA, while Hendrix goes to 4-5 (1-1 SAA).
GAME ONE: Centre 2, Hendrix 1
Game one featured a solid matchup in the circle between Centre's Erika Brewer (Frenchburg, Ky.) and Hendrix's Emily Stockalper.
Stockalper pitched perhaps her best game of the season, but was tagged for a go-ahead solo homer from senior Lauren Richards (Danville, Ky.) in the bottom of the third. It was Richards' first homerun of the year and fourth in her career.
Hendrix finally got to Brewer in the fourth, tying the game at 1-1, but stranded runners on second and third in both the fourth and fifth innings.
In the bottom of the seventh, Abigail Harper (Louisville, Ky.) drew a one-out walk and moved to second on a groundout.
With two outs and Harper in scoring position, pinch-hitting Sam Thompson (Louisville, Ky.) dropped a single into right field. Harper beat the throw home, giving Centre its second walk-off win of the season.
Brewer fanned six batters in the complete-game victory, allowing only one run while scattering six hits.
GAME TWO: Hendrix 13, Centre 4
The Warriors fared better in game two, tagging 15 hits while plating 13 runs.
Hendrix jumped out to a 5-0 lead, powered by Jordan Mallard's two-run homer in the top of the third.
Centre would score four unanswered to pull within 5-4, beginning in the bottom of the third as Haley Simon (Louisville, Ky.) scored while pinch-running.
But the Warriors eventually widened the gap with a five-run fifth, dooming the Colonels' comeback chances.
Centre and Hendrix meet tomorrow (Sunday) at 12 p.m. for the series rubber match.
