Brewer, Colonels topple Warriors in series-clinching 5-2 victory
DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre softball clinched its first Southern Athletic Association (SAA) series of the season, defeating Hendrix, 5-2, in Sunday's rubber match.
Senior pitcher Erika Brewer (Frenchburg, Ky.) earned her second winning decision of the weekend, pitching 6.2 innings while allowing only five hits and one earned run.
Centre improves to 5-7 overall and 3-3 in-conference, dropping Hendrix to 4-6 (1-2 SAA).
The visiting Warriors benefited from a fielding error in the second inning, scoring an unearned run to take an early lead.
Centre was held hitless until the bottom of the third, when freshman Melissa Collins (Louisville, Ky.) dropped a single into right field. But her hit brought in Sam Thompson (Louisville, Ky.), who walked to lead off the frame, tying things at 1-1.
The Colonels took their first lead of the game in the fourth, plating a pair of unearned runs as Abigail Harper (Louisville, Ky.) and Lauren Richards (Danville, Ky.) scored. Cassidy Cook (Louisville, Ky.) drove in the latter to make it 3-1 after four complete.
Centre added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it 5-1. Ellen Stephens (Louisville, Ky.) smacked a one-out double down the left field line, and eventually scored as Cook reached on an error.
Thompson then crossed the plate for the second time of the game on RileyAnne Sharp's (Huntsville, Ala.) double in the right-center gap.
The Warriors scored one in the top of the seventh, chasing Brewer with two outs, but Torey Hawkins (Frankfort, Ky.) came in to close the door with a one-pitch save.
Brewer fanned five batters in the circle, pushing her season total to 18 in 30.2 innings of work.
Centre hits the road next weekend, taking on Sewanee in Tennessee for another three-game SAA series.
