SEWANEE, Tenn. – Centre softball split a Southern Athletic Association (SAA) twin bill at Sewanee Friday, winning game one, 15-5, before dropping a 5-4 decision.
Centre moves to 6-8 overall and 4-4 in the SAA, while Sewanee improves to 2-9 (1-4 SAA).
GAME ONE: Centre 15, Sewanee 5
Centre set a season-high with 15 runs in a blowout victory to open the series, capping the affair with a nine-run seventh inning.
Harper singled in Fly in the fifth, and in the next at-bat Aubuchon scored after an error by the Sewanee catcher.
Richards made it 6-0 with another RBI single, plating Harper.
Senior starter Erika Brewer (Frenchburg, Ky.) allowed four hits and fanned five batters while throwing five scoreless innings, eventually earning her third consecutive winning decision.
The Tigers finally got on the board in the sixth, scoring four on three hits and a Centre fielding error to pull within 6-4.
But the Colonels put the game out of reach in the seventh, beginning with a pinch-hit, two-RBI double from Torey Hawkins (Frankfort, Ky.).
The big inning was punctuated by a three-run homerun from Sydney Milliner (Laconia, Ind.), the first of her career.
Nine individuals finished with a hit in the victory, as Milliner, Harper, Fly and Aubuchon each had a pair of hits.
Richards led all batters with a 3-for-5 effort at the dish, driving in a career-best four runs.
GAME TWO: Sewanee 5, Centre 4
Sewanee scored first in the second contest, as Rachel Hoffman came through with an RBI double.
The Tigers answered with three of their own in the bottom of the frame, powered by Jackie O'Reilly's two-run homer.
The back-and-forth match continued in the fourth, as Harper doubled to bring Aubuchon across to tie the game at 4-4.
Sewanee would load the bases in the bottom of the seventh, and Taylor Wagner eventually singled to bring in the winning run.
The Tigers' walk-off win was their first in SAA action.
