Centre softball shuts out Sewanee in rubber match
SEWANEE, Tenn. - The Centre softball team rebounded from a walk-off loss in the second game of Friday's doubleheader with the Sewanee Tigers, posting a 7-0 shutout victory as senior Erika Brewer (Frenchburg, Ky.) surrendered just one hit in the win.
The Colonels' bats began the game on fire, starting when freshman Melissa Collins (Louisville, Ky.) belted a solo homer in the second at-bat of the contest. After Abigail Harper (Louisville, Ky.) walked, Sarah Aubuchon (Lebanon, Tenn.) and Lauren Richards connected on consecutive doubles to score two more runs. Richards later scored on a sacrifice fly by Ellen Stephens (Louisville, Ky.) and Centre was up 4-0 after the first inning.
As Brewer kept the Tigers' offense at bay, Centre got back on the board in the third inning after Aubuchon stole home. Richards crossed the plate for the second time in the game after a base hit from freshman Sarah Fly (Franklin, Tenn.) to put the Colonels on top by six runs.
The final run of the game for the Colonels came in the top half of the seventh. Richards drew a walk and then freshman Sydney Milliner (Laconia, Ind.) came through with a pinch hit double, plating Richards for the third time in the game. Brewer shut down the Tigers in the bottom of the inning and the Colonels had their first shutout win of the season.
Brewer struck out five Sewanee batters, allowing just four baserunners along the way on three walks and a hit.
Six different Colonels drove in runs on the day as Collins, Aubuchon, Fly and RileyAnne Sharpe (Huntsville, Ala.) each had two hits in the game for Centre.
The Colonels will return to Danville next week to play host to Hanover, Adrian and Denison in tournament action over the St. Patrick's Day weekend.
