Brewer, Hawkins shutout Majors in doubleheader sweep

JACKSON, Miss. – Centre softball blanked Millsaps in a pair of victories Friday, defeating the host Majors by 6-0 and 1-0 scores at the Millsaps Softball Complex.

After winning two Southern Athletic Association series last season, the Colonels (15-11, 7-4 SAA) ensure their third series victory of 2018 with Friday's twin bill sweep over the Majors (14-13, 2-8).

GAME ONE: Centre 6, Millsaps 0

Centre's first gem of the evening came from senior Erika Brewer (Frenchburg, Ky.), who threw a complete-game shutout while allowing just five hits and facing seven above the minimum.

The Colonels got on the board in the first inning, as Lauren Richards (Danville, Ky.) drove in Melissa Collins (Louisville, Ky.).

They would plate four in the third, all with two outs on the board.

Abigail Harper (Louisville, Ky.) drove in two with a double down the right field line, and Ellen Stephens (Louisville, Ky.) and Sam Thompson (Louisville, Ky.) each followed with RBI singles to make it 5-0.

RileyAnne Sharpe (Huntsville, Ala.) brought home Harper in the fifth, making it 6-0 and giving Brewer plenty of insurance.

GAME TWO: Centre 1, Millsaps 0

Junior Torey Hawkins (Frankfort, Ky.) stole the headlines in game two, spinning Centre's second complete-game shutout of the day while allowing only three hits.

Her effort was needed, as Centre's bats were stifled by the Majors' pitching staff for much of the nightcap.

The Colonels scored one in the first in the same fashion as they did in game one, with Richards driving in Collins.

Hawkins stranded five baserunners while picking up the win, her second of the season and first in a complete game effort.

Richards, Harper and Sarah Fly (Franklin, Tenn.) each had multiple hits in the win.

The Colonels and Majors close the series at 1 p.m. ET Saturday, with Centre aiming for its first three-game sweep of the season.
