Colonels stifle Lynx, advance in SAA Tournament

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Centre softball opened the Southern Athletic Association Tournament with an efficient 3-0 victory Thursday afternoon against Rhodes at Frost Stadium.

The Colonels, seeded fourth, improve to 18-16 overall while picking up the first postseason win in first-year Head Coach Tori Brown's career. The five-seed Lynx fall to 20-15 and are one loss from elimination.

Centre wasted little time getting its bats warmed up, converting four straight singles to begin the bottom of the first frame. Freshman Melissa Collins (Louisville, Ky.) delivered the fourth in that sequence, bringing RileyAnne Sharpe (Huntsville, Ala.) and Cassidy Cook (Louisville, Ky.) in to make it 2-0.

Lauren Richards (Danville, Ky.) upped Centre's lead in the bottom of the third, driving home Cook on a RBI triple.

That would be plenty for the Colonels pitching staff.

Starter Erika Brewer (Frenchburg, Ky.) was solid in five innings of work, facing just four above the minimum while allowing only two hits. She struck out four batters, as well.

Torey Hawkins (Frankfort, Ky.) spun her second save of the season, throwing the final two innings on just 14 pitches while allowing only one base runner.

The Colonels advance to face top-seeded and fifth-ranked Berry Friday at 12 p.m. ET.
