Centre softball suffers consecutive defeats, bows out of SAA Tournament

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Centre softball's 2018 campaign came to a close Friday, as the Colonels were eliminated from the Southern Athletic Association Tournament with a pair of losses.

The four-seed Colonels first ran into a buzz saw in top-seed and fifth-ranked Berry, falling 8-0, before dropping a heartbreaking 10-4 decision against Millsaps in game two.

GAME ONE: #5 Berry 8, Centre 0 (6 inn.)

The Colonels were stifled by Berry starter Kassie Howard, recently named SAA Pitcher of the Year. She held the Colonels to just one hit while striking out 12 batters, including eight of the first nine to start the game.

Centre's Erika Brewer (Frenchburg, Ky.) kept things close with three strong innings in the circle before Berry got on the board.

The Vikings scored on a wild pitch in the fourth, and broke the game open with a trio of homeruns in the fifth inning to take a commanding 6-0 lead.

They would add two more in the sixth to signal a run-rule victory.

GAME TWO: Millsaps 10, Centre 4

A costly fifth inning doomed the Colonels in Friday's second game – a must-win against the six-seed Majors.

Millsaps plated a pair of runs in the top of the first, but Centre responded quickly with four in the bottom of the frame.

Lauren Richards (Danville, Ky.) drove two in with a single through the left side, and Melissa Collins (Louisville, Ky.) made it 3-2 after scoring on an error on the next play.

Richards would later come in on a wild pitch, bringing Centre's lead to 4-2.

Centre left the bases loaded each of the next two innings, however, proving especially costly after Millsaps' big fifth inning.

The Majors scored six runs on just two hits in the fifth, taking an 8-4 lead while stealing momentum. They tacked on two more in the seventh for insurance.

Collins, RileyAnne Sharpe (Huntsville, Ala.), Cassidy Cook (Louisville, Ky.) and Sarah Aubuchon (Lebanon, Tenn.) each finished the game with a pair of hits.
