Swim teams split meet against Sewanee

The Centre swim teams had their first conference competition of the season Thursday evening at Sewanee. The men lost 132-109 while the women pulled out a 117-114 victory.

On the men's side, the Colonels performed well in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The team of senior James Leary (Atlanta, Ga.), juniors Wes McCrary (Winchester, Ky.) and Jess Pritchett (Louisville, Ky.) and freshman Patrick Wells (Louisville, Ky.) finished in first place in the event, while the team of senior Knox McConnell (Lexington, Ky.), junior Nick Rauh (Bowling Green, Ky.), sophomore John Coogan (Nashville, Tenn.) and freshman Dustin Wahl (Colorado Springs, Colo.) finished second.

In individual men's events, junior Spencer Vetter (Lexington, S.C.) won the 200-yard breaststroke, while Wes McCrary, Patrick Wells and Jess Pritchett posted a 1-2-3 finish for Centre in the 50-yard freestyle.

The Centre women had individual wins in five events. Junior Danielle Wahl (Colorado Springs, Colo.) was a double winner, taking both the 500-yard and 1000-yard freestyle events. Sophomore Kristen Holliday (Newark, Del.) finished first in the 200-yard butterfly, while junior Hadley Judson (Atlanta, Ga.) won the 100-yard freestyle and freshman Ginger Hall (Louisville, Ky.) won the 50-yard freestyle.

The Colonels needed to finish first and second in the final event of the meet to win, and they did just that, taking first and second in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The team of Ginger Hall, Hadley Judson and seniors Maddie Mescher (Fort Mitchell, Ky.) and Clark Weber (Louisville, Ky.) finished first and the team of Danielle Wahl, seniors Meghan Holliday (Newark, Del.) and Caroline Washnock (Greer, S.C.) and freshman Chloe Peterson (Sturgeon Bay, Wisc.) finished second.

"I was very happy with the effort and resiliency of the team having climbed right off the bus into a tough early-season conference matchup," said head coach Dean Brownley.

The Centre swim teams will go to Birmingham, Ala. for a dual meet against Birmingham Southern and West Florida on October 18th.
