Centre women win, men finish second at Colonel Classic
The Centre swim teams returned to the pool for their first meet of 2014, the Colonel Classic at Boles Natatorium. The women's team finished first at the event and the men's team finished second.
The Centre women were victorious in one relay competition. The team of sophomore Kristen Holliday (Newark, Del.) and seniors Meghan Holliday (Newark, Del.), Maddie Mescher (Fort Mitchell, Ky.) and Clark Weber (Louisville, Ky.) finished first in the 800-yard freestyle relay.
There was also a pair of triple event winners on the women's side, with both coming from the winning 800 free relay squad. Kristen Holliday finished first in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard and 200-yard fly. Clark Weber won the 200-yard, 500-yard and mile freestyles.
On the men's side, the Colonels bested Berry by 2.5 points to come in second place, thanks to wins in four events. There was one multiple winner on the men's side as junior Spencer Vetter (Lexington, S.C.) swept the breaststroke races, finishing first at 100-yard and 200-yard distances. Other event winners included junior John Kelley (Cincinnati, Ohio) in the 400-yard individual medley and senior Travis Adams (Shelbyville, Ky.) in the 1m diving competition.
"This was a great test for us in getting ready for our conference championship," said head coach Dean Brownley. "We will have our hands full with a lot of talent in the conference this year."
The Centre swim teams will compete in two head-to-head meets this week, taking on Cumberlands on the road on January 17th and returning to Danville the following day to do battle with Wittenberg.
