Centre swim teams open season at Louisville quad meet

The Centre swimming and diving teams began their 2014-15 season at the University of Louisville, where they took on Birmingham Southern, Sewanee and Washington & Lee. The men's team finished fourth while the women finished third, with both sides receiving promising performances from newcomers.

On the men's side, the Colonels had one multiple event winner. Freshman Logan Oatman (Paducah, Ky.) won three events in his Centre swimming debut, taking first place in the 500-yard freestyle and both the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke.

Oatman was also part of the 200-yard medley team, also featuring seniors John Kelley (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Spencer Vetter (Lexington, S.C.) and freshman Noah Martin (Spartanburg, S.C.) that finished less than half a second out of first. The 200-yard freestyle relay team of John Kelley, seniors Jess Pritchett (Louisville, Ky.) and Nick Rauh (Bowling Green, Ky.) and sophomore Patrick Wells (Louisville, Ky.) also just missed a first place finish by a tenth of a second.

The Centre women also had standout performances by new swimmers. The one multiple event winner for the Colonels on the women's side was freshman Sarah Hayhurst (Newburgh, Ind.), who took first place in both diving competitions, winning at the 1m and 3m heights, both by decisive scores. Another impressive Centre debut came from freshman Cameron Beach (Greenville, S.C.), who posted a time of 25.27 in the 50-yard freestyle. The final event win for Centre came from Junior Kristen Holliday (Newark, Del.), who took first place in the 200-yard butterfly.

Other notable performances include the 200-yard freestyle team of Cameron Beach, senior Hadley Judson (Atlanta, Ga.), junior Kirsten Larson (Taylor Mill, Ky.) and sophomore Chloe Peterson (Sturgeon Bay, Wisc.), who came within three tenths of a second of first place. Senior and English Channel swimmer Danielle Wahl (Colorado Springs, Colo.) had three second place finishes, taking second in the 200-yard, 500-yard and 1,000-yard freestyle.

The Colonels will be back in the pool on Oct 18th as they travel to Berry for an SAA road meet at 11:00 AM.
