Centre Swim Teams Earn Split Against Berry in Home Opener
DANVILLE, Ky. (CentreAthletics.com) – The Centre swimming and diving teams held their first meet of the season in Boles Natatorium on Saturday afternoon as they took on the Berry Vikings in Southern Athletic Association head to head action. The Colonels came away with a split as the men's team lost 162-120, while the women's team picked up its first win of the year by a score of 171-120.
On the men's side, the Colonels picked up a win in relay competition as the team of senior John Coogan (Nashville, Tenn.), sophomores Noah Martin (Spartanburg, S.C.) and Logan Oatman (Paducah, Ky.) and freshman Mitchell Collins (Richmond, Ky.) took first place in the 400-yard medley relay.
The members of the 400-yard medley relay squad also did well in individual events for Centre. Noah Martin and Mitchell Collins were multiple event winners, with Martin winning both the 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly, while Collins took first place in the 200-yard backstroke and the 200-yard individual medley. John Coogan also picked up an individual win for the Centre men, finishing first in the 200-yard backstroke.
Sophomore Bradley Baker (Paducah, Ky.) rounded out the individual event wins for the Colonels with a first place finish in the 1000-yard freestyle.
The Centre women also picked up one win in today's relay races, as the team of senior Kristen Holliday (Newark, Del.), sophomores Cameron Beach (Greenville, S.C.) and Claire Coleman (Hurricane, W.V.) and freshman Jacquelyn Engel (Lexington, Ky.) took first place in the 400-yard medley relay.
Much like the men's relay squad, the women's 400-yard medley relay team also had individual success against Berry. Reigning CollegeSwimming.com Division III Women's Swimmer of the Week Cameron Beach won three events, taking first in two of her specialty events so far this season, the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyles, as well as the 100-yard butterfly. Kristen Holliday also won three events, finishing first in the 200-yard backstroke, the 200-yard butterfly and the 200-yard individual medley. Claire Coleman was also an individual winner, picking up a victory for Centre in the 100-yard backstroke.
In other individual event wins, senior Taylor Harrison (Austin, Texas) took first place in the 200-yard freestyle, while senior Dana Reynolds (Bowling Green, Ky.) finished first in the 1,000-yard freestyle. Sophomore Sarah Hayhurst (Newburgh, Ind.) also bolstered the Centre scoring today with first place finishes in both of the diving competitions.
The Centre swimming and diving teams will be back in action on Nov. 6 as they travel to Lexington, Ky. to face Transylvania, with a home meet against Franklin the following day.
