Colonels Kick Off SAA Swimming Championships at Birmingham Southern
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (CentreColonels.com) – The first sessions of the Southern Athletic Association Swimming and Diving Championships are in the books from the Crossplex at Birmingham Southern. With two days of events remaining, the Centre swimming and diving teams are in the middle of the pack, with the men's team in third place and the women's team in fourth.
Both teams earned a pair of All-SAA honors on Thursday. On the women's side, the team of senior Kristen Holliday (Newark, Del.), sophomores Cameron Beach (Greenville, S.C.) and Claire Coleman (Hurricane, W.V.) and freshman Jacquelyn Engel (Lexington, Ky.) took third place in the 400-yard medley relay with a combined time of 1:37.73, good for third team all-SAA.
In addition, Cameron Beach posted an impressive time of 24:28 in the 50-yard freestyle to finish in third place and earn third team All-SAA honors. Beach's time was also good enough to earn an NCAA B cut, as she joins Kristen Holliday as the only Centre swimmers on the women's side with B cut times.
On the men's side, not only did the Colonels achieve a pair of all-SAA performances, but both were event wins. In the 400-yard medley relay, the team of senior John Coogan (Nashville, Tenn.), sophomores Logan Oatman (Paducah, Ky.) and Noah Martin (Spartanburg, S.C.) and freshman Mitchell Collins (Richmond, Ky.) posted a winning time of 3:26.60.
The other winning performance for the Centre men came courtesy of sophomore Brad Nordin (Paintsville, Ky.), who emerged victorious for the Colonels in the 1m diving competition.
The 2016 SAA Swimming and Diving Championships will resume on Friday for the second of three days of competition. Live results can be found HERE.
