Centre’s Hayhurst Wins Regional 1m Diving Championship, Advances to Nationals
GRINNELL, Iowa (CentreColonels.com) – The first day of the NCAA Division III Region 2 Diving Championships is in the books from Grinnell College and Centre sophomore Sarah Hayhurst (Newburgh, Ind.) has already punched her ticket to the NCAA Finals with a dominant performance in the 1m diving competition.
Hayhurst, whose dives on the 1m board were rated the second hardest in the 14-diver field in terms of degree of difficulty, scored a total of 447.30 points to take first place in the Regional Championship by over 28 points more than the next closest finisher.
The gap between Hayhurst and second place was larger than the gap between any other two concurrent placements on the leaderboard.
By virtue of her win on the 1m board, Hayhurst has guaranteed herself a place in the NCAA National Diving Championships on Mar. 16-19 in Greensboro, N.C.
Hayhurst will have another opportunity to become a regional champion on Feb. 27 as the Regional Diving Championships will conclude from Grinnell with the 3m competition.
