Hayhurst Wins Regional 3m Diving Competition; Qualifies for NCAA Finals
GRINNELL, Iowa (CentreColonels.com) – The first of two days of competition in the NCAA Region 2 Diving Championships is in the books and once again the shining star of the competition was Centre junior Sarah Hayhurst (Newburgh, Ind.), who took home the regional championship on the women's 3m board.
Hayhurst scored 502.65 points for her 11 dives to finish over 30 points ahead of Sarah Kate Mrkonich of Trinity (Texas), who scored 470.45 points in second place. Mollie Patzke of Trinity finished third with 420.95 points.
The win marks the first regional championship for Hayhurst in the 3m competition after finishing third in the event in each of her first two seasons at Centre. Hayhurst was named an unofficial qualifier for March's NCAA Championships with her win on the 3m board today.
The Region 2 Diving Championships will conclude on Saturday with the women's 1m competition. Hayhurst will be looking to become a three-time winner on the 1m board at the regional championships.
