The 200-yard backstroke marked the third race for Oatman at the NCAA Championships, as he also earned opportunities to race in the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard backstroke by virtue of recording NCAA B Cut times earlier in the 2016-17 season. Oatman posted a time of51.07 in the 100-yard backstroke and 52.24 in the 100-yard fly, cutting over three seconds from his qualifying time in the fly.
The 2017 NCAA Championships marked the conclusion of one of the most decorated individual seasons in Centre history on the men's side, as Oatman became the first Centre men's swimmer to earn an invite to the national finals since Centre Hall of Famer Jon Oldham in 1996.
