Centre swim teams open season with win at Campbellsville

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The Centre swim teams kicked off their 2017-18 season with a very promising showing at Campbellsville University. The Colonels dominated the Tigers to the tune of a 178-44 win for the men and a 158-61 victory for the women.

On the women's side, Centre won all three of its relays. In the first event of the meet, seniors Claire Coleman (Hurricane, W.Va.) and Cameron Beach (Greenville, S.C.) teamed with sophomores Lindsay Everett (Paris, Ky.) and Annie Holmes (Louisville, Ky.) to take first place in the 200-yard medley relay. Coleman and Beach returned to the pool for the 200-yard freestyle relay and combined with senior Mackenzie Weiland (Crestwood, Ky.) and sophomore Chloe Grove (Bucyrus, Ohio) for another first place. Annie Holmes closed out the meet on the women's side alongside sophomores Amelia Blankenbeker (Jeffersonville, Ind.) and Maddie Huber (Fort Thomas, Ky.) and freshman Sarah Phillips (Lexington, Ky.) with a win in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

Phillips also picked up multiple wins in individual events, winning the 50-yard freestyle and posting a 1-2-3 finishing alongside Holmes and Beach in the 100-yard freestyle. The Colonels posted two additional 1-2-3 finishes in individual events. Maddie Huber took first place in the 200-yard freestyle, followed by freshmen Martha Helsley (Prospect, Ky.) and Shelby Montgomery (Georgetown, Ky.), while Chloe Grove, sophomore Cat Gleason (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) and freshman Amanda Flatt (Lawrenceville, Ga.) represented the top three finishers in the 400-yard freestyle.

Other individual event winners for Centre on the women's side include Amelia Blankenbeker in the 800-yard freestyle, Lindsay Everett in the 100-yard breaststroke and freshman Keeton Crowe (Lexington, Ky.) in the 100-yard backstroke.

Centre also won all three relay events in the men's competition. The all-senior lineup of Logan Oatman (Paducah, Ky.), Bradley Baker (Paducah, Ky.), Noah Martin (Spartanburg, S.C.) and Jack Miller (Richmond, Ky.) took first place in the 200-yard medley relay. Juniors Tyler Stevenson (Franklin, N.C.), Matt Calvert (Danville, Ky.) and Mitchell Collins (Richmond, Ky.) combined with sophomore Arthur Ensign-George (Louisville, Ky.) for a first place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay. In the 400-yard freestyle relay, Baker and Calvert teamed with sophomore Michael Hambleton (Lake Bluff, Ill.) and freshman Jimmy Kelley (Cincinnati, Ohio) closed the meet in style with a win.

The relay swimmers on the men's side also enjoyed success in individual events. Mitchell Collins picked up two wins, taking first in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard breaststroke. Logan Oatman finished first in the 200-yard freestyle, Arthur Ensign-George won the 800-yard freestyle and Michael Hambleton took first place in the 100-yard butterfly. Jimmy Kelley picked up his first college individual event win in the 100-yard backstroke.

There were also a pair of 1-2-3 finishes for the Centre men. Bradley Baker, Matt Calvert and Tyler Stevenson took the top three spots in order for the 400-yard freestyle, while Noah Martin won the 200-yard individual medley, followed by freshmen Collin Cummins (Danville, Ky.) and Grey Pendery (Fort Thomas, Ky.) in second and third, respectively. Freshman Matt Swedan (Asheville, N.C.) also picked up a win in his first collegiate meet, taking first in the 100-yard freestyle.

The Centre swim teams will be off for two weeks before returning to action at the Derby City Invitational on Oct. 6 from the University of Louisville.
