Colonels drop head to head meet at Cumberlands
WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. - Fresh off a nice sweep of Berry in their home opener, the Centre swimming and diving teams took to the road to face the University of the Cumberlands, but were unable to match their success from the previous weekend as they suffered a pair of losses.
On the men's side, the Colonels lost by a score of 162-72, but still had several outstanding performances and some individual event winners.
Sophomore Arthur Ensign-George (Louisville, Ky.) continued his mastery of the 1000-yard freestyle, shaving eight seconds off of his seed time to take first place in the event with a time of 10:05.42.
Senior and reigning Southern Athletic Association Men's Swimmer of the Week Logan Oatman (Paducah, Ky.) won yet another 100-yard backstroke for the Colonels, this time finishing in 54.30 to take first place by over a second and a half.
The Centre women fell to Cumberlands by a score of 140-91, but also performed well in some of the individual events.
The first win for the Colonels on the women's side came courtesy of sophomore Amelia Blankenbeker (Jeffersonville, Ind.), who took first place in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:57.98, matching her top time of the year in that event.
In the 500-yard freestyle, sophomore Chloe Grove (Bucyrus, Ohio) came away with a victory, taking nearly a full second off of her seed time to win with a time of 5:20.74, good enough to win the race by over three seconds.
In diving, senior Sarah Hayhurst (Newburgh, Ind.) picked up a pair of victories for Centre, scoring 287.00 points and 193.75 points in the respective diving competitions on the women's side.
The Colonels will return to Boles Natatorium for their next meet as they welcome the Sewanee Tigers to Danville on Nov. 10 for an SAA showdown.
