Colonels begin competition at House of Champions
INDIANAPOLIS - The Centre swim teams kicked off the first of three days of competition at the House of Champions meet, hosted by IUPUI and featuring teams across all divisions. The Friday session consisted of mostly preliminary events, but the Colonels still had some strong swims.
On the women's side, the meet started with the 200-yard freestyle relay and the Colonels had an excellent opening swim as the team of senior Cameron Beach (Greenville, S.C.), sophomores Amelia Blankenbeker (Jeffersontown, Ind.) and Annie Holmes (Louisville, Ky.) and freshman Sarah Phillips (Lexington, Ky.) posted a time of 1:37.48, with Blankenbeker clocking a split time of 24.48. Beach and Phillips also teamed with sophomore Lindsay Everett (Paris, Ky.) and freshman Keeton Crowe (Lexington, Ky.) to finish with a time of 4:05.64 in the 400-yard medley relay, nearly ten seconds faster than their seed time.
The 500-yard freestyle was another solid event for the Centre women. Sophomore Chloe Grove (Bucyrus, Ohio) posted a time of 5:10.37, followed by Blankenbeker at 5:19.94. Other notable times for the Colonels in that event include freshman Martha Helsley (Prospect, Ky.), who finished in 5:31.36, and freshman Laura Fryar (Louisville, Ky.), who posted a time of 5:52.56.
The Centre men also had strong opening performances in the relay events. The 200-yard freestyle relay squad of senior Noah Martin (Spartanburg, S.C.), junior Mitchell Collins (Richmond, Ky.) and sophomores Arthur Ensign-George (Louisville, Ky.) and Michael Hambleton (Lake Bluff, Ill.) finished with a time of 1:27.14, knocking three seconds off of their seed time. In the 400-yard medley relay, the team of Collins, Ensign-George, Martin and freshman Jimmy Kelley (Cincinnati) posted a time of 3:30.55, besting their seed time by nearly nine full seconds.
In the 50-yard freestyle, Martin posted a time of 21.90, while Collins finished in 22.03. Ensign-George had another excellent swim in the 500-yard freestyle, finishing in 4:43.95. The 200-yard individual medley produced a pair of solid times for the Colonels as freshman Collin Cummins (Danville, Ky.) finished in 1:59.71, while senior Bradley Baker (Paducah, Ky.) posted a time of 2:01.43.
