DANVILLE, Ky. (CentreColonels.com) – The Centre women's basketball team competed in their final home game of the regular season as they faced the Berry Vikings at Alumni Gymnasium. The second and fourth quarters doomed the Colonels in a 67-42 loss to the Vikings.
Centre got off to a nice start, holding the Vikings to just one basket in their first ten attempts while sophomore Abigail Stewart (LaGrange, Ky.) scored six quick points. Berry tied the score at 7-7 before Centre closed out the opening quarter with baskets by freshman Ami Ballard (Louisville, Ky.) and sophomore Lauren Moore (Milton, Ky.).
The Colonels built a 14-7 lead early in the second quarter on a three-pointer by sophomore Lakken Miller (Liberty, Ky.), but that would prove to be the biggest lead of the game for Centre. The Vikings took advantage of Centre turnovers and scored seven points in less than a minute to tie the score. From there, Berry slowly built their lead as Alex Weems and Kristin Rampersad scored 15 of Berry's 21 points in the quarter. After a jumper by junior Paige Kellam (Hebron, Ky.), Berry scored the final eight points of the period to take a 28-18 lead going into the halftime break.
In the third quarter the Centre offense returned to form, aided by the energy of Paige Kellam and Lauren Moore. The Vikings heated up from three-point range, with Rampersad converting two in a row. With Centre trailing 43-27, the Colonels went on a run to close the quarter as Abigail Stewart, junior Olivia Schad (Cincinnati, Ohio) and freshman Mikayla Fee scoring seven straight points to chip into the Vikings' lead. Valerie McLure scored on the final possession of the period to give Berry a 45-34 lead going into the fourth quarter.
Cold shooting spelled doom for the Colonels in the fourth quarter as free throws by Schad and senior Caroline Andreassen (Kenosha, Wisc.) represented the only points for Centre in the period. Berry outscored the Colonels 22-8 in the final frame as Centre shot just 2-11 over the last ten minutes of the contest.
Abigail Stewart led the Colonels with ten points on 4-4 shooting.
Paige Kellam paced the Colonels in rebounds and assists with six each.
Kristin Rampersad led all scorers with 19 points. Ashley McKee, Valerie McLure and Alex Weems each added 12 points for Berry in the win.
Berry shot 49.1% on 26-53 shooting, compared to 27.6% for the Colonels on 16-58 from the floor.
The Colonels, now 4-7 in Southern Athletic Association play, will take to the road for their final three games of 2016-17. Centre will play at Rhodes on Friday evening in Memphis. The Colonels defeated the Lynx 43-37 on Jan. 13.
