Colonels Cap Regular Season with 73-66 Triumph at Sewanee

SEWANEE, Tenn. (CentreColonels.com) – Junior guard Olivia Schad (Cincinnati, Ohio) paced three Colonels in double-figures with 16 points to help the Centre women's basketball team to a 73-66 victory over host Sewanee in the regular season finale on Saturday afternoon at Juhan Gymnasium.

With the win, the Colonels (7-18, 5-9 SAA) earn the season sweep of the Tigers (9-15, 6-8 SAA).

Centre will be the No. 7 seed heading into the upcoming Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Tournament and will face No. 2 seed Millsaps on Friday, Feb. 24 in Birmingham, Ala. The Majors fell by a score of 73-66 to Birmingham Southern as the Panthers earned the SAA regular season title and hosting rights for the tournament with the win. Sewanee will be the No. 6 seed in the tournament.

On Saturday, with the Colonels holding a 13-9 edge, senior guard Caroline Andreassen (Kenosha, Wis.) knocked down a 3-pointer to ignite a 7-0 run for Centre followed by back-to-back baskets by sophomore forward Abigail Stewart (LaGrange, Ky.).

The Colonels owned a 23-14 advantage after another Andreassen 3-pointer, before the Tigers closed the first quarter with a 7-0 surge to shrink the Centre lead to 23-21 after the first frame.

Sewanee would extend the run to 11-0 into the second period as the Tigers took their first lead of the afternoon at 25-23.

Centre responded with a 9-3 spurt highlighted by 3-pointers by Schad and sophomore guard Lakken Miller (Liberty, Ky.) to give the Colonels a 31-27 advantage with 3:47 showing on the clock.

Sewanee battled back to cut the deficit to 33-32, before Centre answered with 13 straight points into the second half, pushing the Colonels' lead to its largest of the game at 46-32 with just over eight minutes to play in the third quarter. Schad scored the final five points of the run for Centre.

The Colonels owned a 12-point advantage at 65-53 with just under four minutes remaining in the game, when Sewanee connected on three straight shots from behind the arc to minimize the Centre lead to 65-62 with two minutes to play.

The Colonels would outscore the Tigers 8-4 for the remainder of the game to hold off the Sewanee comeback.

Schad finished 5-of-8 from the field, including a perfect 4-of-4 from long range to go with 2-of-2 makes from the charity stripe.

Stewart tallied 14 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the field and a 6-of-8 showing at the free throw line, while Miller added 13 markers, connecting on 5-of-8 field goals, 3-of-5 coming from downtown.

Schad and Stewart each pulled down six rebounds for the Colonels. Sophomore forward Day Vance (Knoxville, Tenn.) grabbed a game-high nine boards in the win.

Andreassen recorded seven points and a game-high six assists for Centre.

Bella Taylor netted a game-high 31 points for the Tigers, while Allison Hitchcock added 15 markers in the game.

The Colonels shot season-highs of 58.1 percent (25-of-43) from the field, 64.3 percent (9-of-14) from behind the arc and 73.7 percent (14-of-19) from the free throw line compared to Sewanee's 40.4 percent (23-of-57) on field goals, 28.6 percent (8-of-28) on 3-pointers and 75.0 percent (12-of-16) on free throws.

Centre outrebounded the Tigers 37-19 in the win and dished out 19 assists on the day.
