DANVILLE, Ky. – Sophomore Kat Wilson dropped a career-high 29 points Saturday as the Centre women's basketball squad defeated Maryville, 86-76, in the finale of the Lee's Famous Recipe/Hampton Inn Classic in Alumni Gymnasium.
The Suwanee, Ga., native drained 6 of 10 from long range, adding eight rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals as the Colonels (2-0) defeated Maryville (0-2) for the first time since the 2013-14 season. The Fighting Scots had won each of the last four meetings, including a 73-39 decision in last year's Classic.
Both sides came out of the gates clicking on offense, but the visiting Scots held an advantage after the opening 10 minutes thanks to a 9-for-14 (64.3%) shooting clip.
Trailing 22-18 after one quarter, Centre bounced back and regained the lead when senior Paige Kellam (Hebron, Ky.) banked in a jumper with 2:33 on the clock.
The Colonels shot 16 of 29 (55.2%) overall in the first half, taking a 41-36 lead into the break. Centre also out-rebounded Maryville 19-12 in the opening two quarters, hauling in eight offensive boards.
Wilson set the tone early in the third quarter, nailing a 3-pointer to open the second-half scoring.
Senior Olivia Schad (Cincinnati) found Kellam on a backdoor cut on the following Centre possession, resulting in an easy bucket and the first double figure lead of the game, 46-36.
Maryville climbed back, capitalizing on a handful of offensive rebounds to reel off a 12-2 run and close within 51-46.
Centre wouldn't relinquish its lead, though, answering every Maryville push with one of its own.
The Colonels ended up outscoring the Scots 45-40 in the third and fourth quarters, as Wilson netted 19 of her 29 across the final two periods.
Schad helped the Colonels seal the win, scoring 10 of her 12 in the fourth quarter while going 7 of 8 from the free throw line.
As a team, Centre hit 16 of 20 freebies in the final frame, helping to negate Maryville's 9 of 17 (52.9%) shooting effort and hold off any comeback bid.
Kellam followed Wilson's scoring with 18 points on 7 of 8 shooting. Schad and junior Abigail Stewart (LaGrange, Ky.) finished with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
The Colonels are back home this Tuesday, Nov. 21, hosting in-state foe Spalding in Alumni Gym at 7 p.m. ET.
