DANVILLE, Ky. – Junior Cheyenne Bunner (Mars Hill, N.C.) sank a layup with no time left as the Centre women's basketball team improved to 5-1 on the season with a thrilling 59-58 victory over the Mount St. Joseph Lions in Alumni Gym.
In a game that featured five ties and seven lead changes, the Colonels overcame an eight-point fourth quarter deficit to earn their fifth win of the season. Mount St. Joseph falls to 3-2 with the loss.
With the game tied at 38-38 after three period, the visiting lions stormed out of the gates with a 6-0 run to open the fourth quarter. The Colonels chipped away with free throws by Kat Wilson (Suwanee, Ga.) and Paige Kellam (Hebron, Ky.), but the Lions maintained their advantage and connected on consecutive three-pointers to take their biggest lead of the second half at 53-46.
A Kellam jumper in the lane cut it to five and an excellent baseline out-of-bounds play sprung Wilson free for a straightaway three to make it 53-51 MSJ. Another Wilson jumper later and the game was once again tied at 53-53 with two minutes to play.
Mount St. Joseph took the lead again as Maddie Haberthy nailed a long contested triple to put the Lions up by three. Once again the Colonels refused to panic as Olivia Schad (Cincinnati) made a pair of free throws and Abigail Stewart (LaGrange, Ky.) put the Colonels back on top with a friendly roll on a jumper in the final minute.
The Lions crashed the offensive glass in the final 30 seconds, grabbing two clutch offensive rebounds and giving themselves an opportunity to recapture the lead, and MSJ did take advantage of the opportunity as Lainee Studer hit a tough runner from 15 feet out to retake the lead for the Lions with 7.8 seconds left.
On the Colonels' final offensive possession, Wilson's runner missed off the glass, Stewart grabbed the offensive rebound and the Lions tied her up. After some confusion, the Colonels got the ball on the possession arrow with 0.4 seconds left on the clock. The Colonels were patient on their last ditch inbounds play and Kellam found Bunner for the winning score.
Wilson led the Colonels with 14 points for the game. Kellam finished with 12 points.
Sophomore Mikayla Fee (Seymour, Ind.) had a career night, picking up her first collegiate double-double with ten points and ten rebounds to go along with four assists.
The Colonels forced the Lions into 24 turnovers and held a 15-8 advantage on the offensive glass.
The next game for the Centre women's basketball team will be the Southern Athletic Association opener for the Colonels as Centre will hit the road for Tennessee to take on the Sewanee Tigers. The Colonels won both matchups against the Tigers in 2016-17.
