DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Despite a hiatus lasting more than two weeks, the Centre women's basketball team continued its hot start to the season with a 62-48 victory against Rockford at the Daytona Beach Shootout.
Sitting at 7-1 overall, the Colonels are off to their best start since their NCAA "Sweet 16" season in 2011-12. Rockford falls to 1-8 with the loss.
A cold-shooting start for both sides saw the Colonels down 12-9 after the first quarter, but things would turn around quickly in the second.
The Colonels trailed by five after the Regents sank a basket just moments into the second quarter, but rattled off a 15-2 run from that point to take a 24-16 lead. Madison Rice (Knoxville, Tenn.) scored nine of Centre's 15 points during the stretch.
That lopsided spurt helped Centre outscore Rockford 28-10 in the period – setting a season-high for points in a quarter – and carry a 37-22 advantage into the break.
The Colonels committed only three turnovers in the opening half, compared to the Regents' 10.
Centre continued its hot shooting out of the halftime intermission, forcing a Rockford timeout less than two minutes into the third quarter after a quick 6-2 start.
Not long after, the Colonels pushed their lead up to 20 on a bucket from junior Cheyenne Bunner (Mars Hill, N.C.), making it 47-27.
Rockford would trim the Colonels' lead prior to the start of the fourth quarter, making it 50-34 with 10 minutes to play.
The margin proved to be plenty, as Rockford never threatened and trailed by double figures the rest of the contest.
Junior Abigail Stewart (LaGrange, Ky.) led Centre with 12 points on 6 of 8 shooting, and Rice followed with 11.
Bunner chipped in seven rebounds as Centre won the edge on the glass, 44-31, and finished with 15 second chance points off of 12 offensive boards.
Senior Paige Kellam (Hebron, Ky.) paced all players with five assists, as Centre totaled a season-high 20 helpers.
The Colonels close out their stay in Daytona with a meeting Thursday against Lasell. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET.
